During the first week of the US Open Daniil Medvedev hit the headlines because he made fun of the crowds, and thus protrayed as the new 'Bad Boy' of Tennis in the local media. The Russian player isn't new to behaving like that: "At a junior level I was the craziest guy"
"During the tournament, I watched the highlights of the day every night and none of my matches were included, basically. People commented Medvedev needs just three shots to win the match."
The 23-year-old world No. 4 told L'Equipe: But honestly, I think it will not happen. For example, it was funny when Marat Safin was asked about it and he said, But what kind of bad guy is he? He is a very nice guy. The bad guys look much different."
Medvedev concluded: "It's hard to explain because when I was No. 15, I was good already. Then I wanted to get into the top 10, which is never easy. And then with the US series when I lost during the third round, I managed to get in the top 10. And you can tell yourself, Okay, I've done a full circle, but I didn't want to stop."
Reflecting on how he sees his career progressing: "I just want to see how far I can go. It could be No. 1. If it doesn't happen, that means that I wouldn't be strong enough. And I know that here, now, to get to be high up in the race, you have to do a significant effort, but I'm trying to do my best."
