Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic both surprisingly won their matches on Tuesday at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen.
It should have been a highly-anticipated clash between world number one Barty and no.3 Osaka that will kick-off the action in China on Tuesday. But 2018 US Open champion Osaka had to
withdrew from the tournament and so she was replaced by
WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai finalist,
Kiki Bertens.
And Bertens showed the supporters in China that she did not come there to just play 2 matches. Although Barty had a better start, winning the first set 6-3 and being a break up twice in the second, Bertens fought. She did not give up in the second set while losing 2-3 and turned the set.
Bertens won 8 games in a row to turn the second set to 6-3 and get the lead of 4-0 in the third. Barty managed to take one break back, but that was not enough to stop Bertens, who earned her first point in Shenzhen and can still, as a substitute, advance into the semifinals.
In the second match, to defeated players from the Day 1 fought for the first point. And it was
Belinda Bencic who entered the match better, winning the first set 6-3. But Kvitova showed in the second set that she still wants to fight and won it 6-1. But this was not enough for the Czech as Bencic won the third set 6-4 to earn the first point.
