Roger Federer has arrived in Shanghai as he prepares to be named the "Icon Athlete" of 2023 at the ATP Rolex Shanghai Masters.
It was announced in May that the ATP 1000 tournament would be returning to the Tour's calendar after four years, during which time the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult to compete in China.
Alongside the announcement of the tournament's return, it was revealed that 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer would be present at the event as a special guest and that he would receive the title of "Icon Athlete."
Last month, the tournament director Michael A. Luevano explained why they decided to create the first-ever international "Icon Athlete" award for the 42-year-old tennis legend.
"Based on our long-term relationship with Roger and Team 8, his management company, we believe, along with the Shanghai fans, that Roger has gone above and beyond a normal sportsman to a city. Together with the Juss Sports Group, we have created the first international Icon Athlete designation for Federer," he said.
Luevano was there to welcome Federer at the airport as he arrived in the city following a family holiday in Japan.
Federer has previously spoken of his own excitement to visit Shanghai and receive the award, recalling when he was present for the opening of the stadium.
"I'm very excited to be named Rolex Shanghai Masters Icon Athlete for 2023. I remember coming to Shanghai for the first time for the opening of the stadium and I have been close friends with Juss Event and tournament organisers. I am happy to keep the story going and I look forward to seeing everyone in October," he told ATP Tour in May.
