Martina Navratilova has become part of an escalating online debate involving MLB legend Roger Clemens after referring to him as a “sexual predator” in a post on X responding to a user discussion that referenced the former pitcher. The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion did not address Clemens directly, but engaged with a separate post discussing his public comments and past controversies.
The exchange emerged within a broader discussion triggered after Clemens spoke in support of
MLB players who were warned for writing Bible verses on team-issued Pride Night caps. The original incident involved San Francisco Giants pitchers JT Brubaker, Landon Roupp and Ryan Walker during a game against the Chicago Cubs.
Clemens’ remarks defending religious expression in sport were widely circulated across social media, where users debated MLB uniform policies and broader cultural tensions surrounding Pride initiatives and individual expression.
Navratilova’s response appeared within that thread, where Clemens was referenced alongside allegations tied to his past. Her comments quickly gained traction online and became one of the most widely shared reactions in the discussion.
Clemens defends religious expression in MLB uniforms
Roger Clemens, a former 11-time MLB All-Star, argued during an appearance on The Will Cain Show that players should be allowed to express personal beliefs through uniform modifications, including religious messages.
He compared Bible verse inscriptions to other approved tributes in baseball history, suggesting that players have long used equipment and apparel to honour individuals or personal causes.
“We alter our uniforms all the time with numbers or somebody that has passed away,” Clemens said. “I know one time in Boston, Larry Bird retired. I put his hat on. They put 33, silver marker on the hat to honor Larry Bird. I did it for my mom and grandmother.”
He also framed the issue around personal faith, arguing that some players view their careers through a religious lens and should be able to reflect that publicly.
“I love it that these guys show the blessings that the Lord has given them to be out there on that field. That’s the way it was for me.”
Clemens added that MLB could consider structured alternatives similar to custom cleats, allowing religious messaging while maintaining uniform regulations.
“They do the special cleats where you can paint, do your cleats how you want it. Maybe they do something like that and guys can have a hat with a Bible verse. They feel strongly about it.”
Navratilova responds in viral X post referencing Clemens
Martina Navratilova’s comments did not come in response to Clemens directly, but to a post on X that referenced him and repeated allegations linked to his past. In that context, she issued a strongly worded reaction that quickly spread across social media.
“Never liked him. He cheated on his wife, he cheated with steroids and he is a sexual predator…”
The post gained traction due to the prominence of both figures and the intensity of the language used, particularly given Clemens’ status as one of MLB’s most decorated pitchers.
Following Navratilova’s remarks, another user replied: “Funny Martina talking about someone doing roids lol. She was on them for almost her whole career”
Navratilova responded directly to that message with an explicit warning: “Careful- I can find you if you keep this shit up. Free speech can only get you so far, asswipe”
Navratilova, a former World No. 1 and 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, has frequently engaged in public debate on social media around sport and cultural issues, often responding to broader threads rather than direct exchanges.
