Coco Gauff opens up about teaming up with Taylor Fritz in United Cup mixed doubles. The duo secured a crucial victory in their opening tie against Canada, defeating Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6, 7-5, putting Team USA at the top of Group A.
This wasn’t the first time Fritz and Gauff joined forces in doubles. Back at the Olympic Games, they were the third seeds in the draw. They won their opener against Argentine pair Nadia Podoroska and Máximo González but fell in the quarterfinals to the Canadian team of Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski.
Gauff and Fritz lead USA to victory
Team USA had a strong start to the tournament, with Gauff claiming a notable win over Fernandez (6-3, 6-2). However, World No. 4 Fritz squandered a one-set lead against Auger-Aliassime (No. 28) and lost 6-4, 5-7, 3-6. Despite the singles split, the Americans secured victory in mixed doubles, setting the stage for their next tie against Croatia later tonight.
In the on-court interview after their mixed doubles win, the presenter noted Fritz’s reputation as a "very chatty doubles partner." Gauff responded with a smile, “Yeah, he is, he talks a lot!” Fritz playfully added, “I don’t shut up.”
Gauff shared her thoughts: “I’m not used to it, but after playing at the Olympics, I was mentally prepared for it. He made some good calls, so I trust his opinion. I’m always asking him what he thinks, so I trust it a lot. I feel like he sees the game really well, so I’m learning from him out here.”
The presenter then asked Fritz, “It can be a lonely sport sometimes; it’s nice to have some company out there?” He replied, “Yeah, I mean, as long as she’s ready for it. I’m an extremely analytical person on the court, so I’m seeing all these things, and yeah, I’ll just say it—I don’t shut up, so I hope she can deal with it.”
Team USA returns to the court on Tuesday against Croatia. Fritz will open the tie facing Borna Coric (No. 90), while Gauff takes on Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekic (No. 19), who eliminated her in Paris 2024. The mixed doubles pairing for the match is expected to be Gauff/Fritz versus Vekic/Dodig.
