Kaja Juvan has praised her friend and opponent Swiatek ahead of their third-round match at the
US Open.
Slovenian player Juvan has had a successful run so far at the last Grand Slam of the year. After making it through qualifiers she defeated 29th seed
Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round before taking out home player Lauren Davis 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3, to set up a clash with Swiatek.
Meanwhile, the world No. 1 has made a very strong start to her bid to defend her US Open title. She dropped just one game in her first-round match against Rebecca Peterson, winning 6-0, 6-1. The 22-year-old then went on to defeat Australia's
Daria Saville in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Swiatek spoke of close friendship with Juvan
After her second-round win, Swiatek talked about how it will be 'tricky' to play against Juvan because she is one of her closest friends on the
WTA Tour.
"You know, I think we both can kind of cut off the off-court friendship and just play our game, and then we are friends back. At least there's nothing crazy is going to happen.
"But for sure she's, yeah, she's my best friend on tour. She's one of the most, like, honest and I think smart people on tour. I'm happy that she's my friend, but yeah, we've got to play against each other. It's a tricky situation, but I think we both know how to be professional and just play the match and that's all," she said.
Juvan opens up on what she likes about Swiatek
Meanwhile, Juvan spoke highly of her opponent, saying that fame hasn't changed the tennis star.
"What I like about Iga is that she hasn’t changed at all. She has her own things, we talk like before - she is like every other girl," she said.
Juvan added that the Polish player is clever and truthful.
"She is curious, highly intelligent, and honest," she continued.
