Carlos Alcaraz has warned his fans about individuals using his identity to try and trick people into paying to meet him.
World No. 1 Alcaraz's popularity has soared in the last few years as he has risen up the tennis rankings. Many see him as an incredible young talent, and with good reason.
The 20-year-old already has twelve ATP titles to his name and is a two-time Grand Slam champion, having won the 2022 US Open before defeating seven-time champion Novak Djokovic at this year's Wimbledon.
However, the Spaniard's new-found fame has some drawbacks. In a post on his Instagram story, Alcaraz claimed that he had learned of a scam in which individuals were pretending to be him and tricking his fans into paying for what they thought was a chance to meet the tennis star.
In the post, Alcaraz warned his followers and expressed his sadness at the fact that scammers were willing to exploit his fans:
"It has been brought to my attention that there are individuals who are falsely claiming to represent me and offer fans to meet with me if they pay," he wrote, "My team and I are not behind any of this soliciting, nor do I participate in meetings like this! My fans are the best and I am saddened that individuals are trying to take advantage of them."
This isn't the first time that the young player has had to deal with the negative side of his meteoric rise in the sport. In a recent interview with El Pais, he admitted to struggling a bit with not being able to lead a normal life, but that he also appreciates how lucky he is to be able to live his dream at such a young age.
"It has its good and not-so-good things. In some respects, I miss being able to do certain things,
"I miss doing some of the things that normal 20-year-olds do, but that’s short-lived. Everyone wants to live their dream and I am fortunate to be able to live it and achieve it," he said.
Alcaraz is now getting ready to compete at the Canadian Open in preparation for defending his US Open title in a few weeks' time.
