On the battle for equal pay, Rafael Nadal has thrown his weight behind supporting the cause and said that he wants it to be judged fairly on merit instead of name value giving an example of Serena Williams.
Nadal said that if Serena Williams filled more stadiums and generates more from a commercial angle, he doesn't think he should be given more money as a result because of who he is. But also he gave a double edged sword that equality should happen if they generate the amount of money given to overtake the men. He also said that in his viewpoint, there is already equality in multiple tournaments. Some would argue that it is not enough, but it is a cause that Nadal supports.
“For me, equality is not about giving away. If Serena generates more than me and fills stadiums, I don't want to earn more than Serena because ‘he is Rafa Nadal.’ I want equality. I want women to earn more than men if they generate it. In tennis, should the prizes be equal? In most tournaments they are. In my sport, I have always supported that internally," said Nadal via La Sexta.
