The International Tennis Integrity Agency has addressed Simona Halep's name appearing on the US Open entry list.
It has been almost a year since Halep was able to compete on the WTA Tour. The Romanian received a doping ban after she tested positive for a banned substance twice, meaning she has been unable to compete since last year's US Open.
Halep has appealed the ban, providing evidence of accidental contamination, but her hearing has been delayed several times.
Prior to this, Halep won two Grand Slam titles, at the 2018 French Open and at Wimbledon 2019 respectively, and has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the world. However, her legacy and reputation are now on the line as she awaits to see if she will be able to compete again.

Appears on US Open list

Fans of the 31-year-old were delighted to see that her name appeared on the 2023 US Open entry list.
Although it has an asterisk next to it, indicating that her entry in the tournament is provisional and dependent on the outcome of her appeal, it is the first time that her name has appeared on an entry list at all since her ban last year.
This was made even more significant after Halep was charged with another doping violation following biological passport irregularities.

ITIA respond with statement

However, the ITIA have addressed Halep's appearance on the list with a statement, making it clear that Halep's participation remains uncertain and that if she remains suspended, she won't compete at the major
"Good morning. I promise you that no decision has been made available to anyone yet. In the US Open player field, it is clearly marked as provisionally suspended, and therefore, if she remains suspended, she will be withdrawn. If not, she can compete."
