Iga
Swiatek, Daniil Medvedev, and Taylor Fritz are among those confirmed for the
third edition of the 2024 World Tennis League. The exhibition tournament
revealed its star-studded lineup, set to take place from December 19 to 22 at
the Etihad Stadium.
The
tournament's format features four teams: Eagles, Falcons, Hawks, and Kites,
each comprising two male and two female players, totalling 16 players. The
lineup includes five men and five women from the top 10, who will compete in a
round-robin format to determine the two finalist teams. Each tie in the group
stage includes men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, as well as
a mixed doubles match.
The number
of ties won by each team is considered, and if necessary, the total number of
games won is used to break ties. An additional innovation is the 'super
shoot-out tiebreak,' which grants two bonus points to teams. These 10-point
tiebreaks will offer a bonus of three points when two teams are tied in the
number of games won.
The lineup
includes two Olympic gold medallists and five Grand Slam champions. Fourteen of
the 16 players in the tournament have previously participated in one of the
earlier editions, while the two debutants will be 2024 Wimbledon champion
Barbora Krejcikova and two-time Grand Slam runner-up Jasmine Paolini.
The last
championship team was the Eagles, featuring Russians Daniil Medvedev, Andrey
Rublev, and Mirra Andreeva, along with American former Australian Open champion
Sofia Kenin. They defeated Team Hawk in the final, composed of Poles Iga
Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz; Caroline Garcia and Casper Ruud.
