Belinda Bencic has said that she is still proud of her
Olympic Games success but that she is also looking toward greater successes.
World No. 13 Bencic soared to victory at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago, defeating Marketa Vondrousova in the final 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. This was one of her biggest moments on the sport's senior stage.
Since then, Bencic has made more fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, as well as making it to the Round of 16 at this year's US Open. This is the closest she has got to a major title so far, despite achieving a noticeable victory over Angelique Kerber at Flushing Meadows when she was still a teenager.
Bencic says she wants to achieve greater successes
In a recent interview, Bencic was asked if she still looked at her Olympic gold medal, to which the Swiss player jokingly replied: "Yeah, I put my timer every two hours."
Bencic continued by saying that she is proud of her achievement in Tokyo, but that "it's in the past."
"No, I mean, from time to time when I’m home, I like to look at it. Of course, like when you’re at a tournament, you don’t think about, oh, like I won the Olympics.
"Of course you’re really proud of it, but it’s in the past. You always work towards more and more and more. But sometimes it is nice, like, to take a step back and look at the pictures and then think about the experiences and kind of look at the medal. So maybe after my career I’ll doing more of often," she said.
Bencic stresses doubles medal
Gold in singles was not the only medal that the 26-year-old won in Tokyo, as she and partner Viktorija Golubic also achieved the silver medal in women's doubles. The pair lost to Czech pair Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková in the final, but Bencic suggested it was a little annoying that her doubles accolade was often forgotten about.
"It’s funny, they kind of forget the doubles, you know? It’s always like Olympic gold medallist, but I’m like, no, I have silver, too!" she said.
