Serbia’s tennis player Nina Stojanovic said she received some ‘ugly’ comments while playing legendary Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Olympics.
The 27-year-old partnered with the former world number one in the competition in the mixed doubles category, but their journey came to an end in the semifinal as they lost to the pair of Laura Siegemund and Kevin Krawietz in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2. The two did not participate in the bronze medal contest against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty and John Peers.
Stojanovic was recently quoted in a report talking about her experience playing with a player like Djokovic. The Belgrade-born revealed that she received ugly comments after the former world number one lost in the men’s singles category in the semifinal to Germany’s Alexander Zverev with a score of 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 as some fans blame her for his downfall.
"I don't want to say anything ugly, but it's not a nice feeling when you read later and come across more ugly statements claiming that he was tired in singles because of me,” she said. “Someone has to make a story to be interesting, I don't want to give details, but I don't think.”
Djokovic is often regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles. He is currently spending time on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury during the French Open.
That injury forced Djokovic to withdraw from the competition just before the start of the quarterfinal against Norway’s Casper Ruud. On the other hand, Stojanovic never managed to make it big, at least in the singles category. She recently participated in the WTA Challengers event, where she finished as the champion after beating America’s Vivian Golf in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
