The former world number 1 and Grand Slam champion John Newcombe adviced Nick Kyrgios after his meltdown earlier in 2019 and ahead of the 2020 Australian Open.
Kyrgios was in danger of not being able to play on the ATP Tour but in the end he got
just a 16-month probation period."I can't speak for him but if it was me it would be tough having that ban hanging over you. But I guess you've just got to learn to zip up,"
Newcombe told The Age.Kyrgios helped his team with 2 victories in group stage at the Davis Cup but he was not able to play more matches due to ongoing injury.
"I thought it was great that Nick played in the Davis Cup but it's a bit of a worry that he has recurring injuries, especially around where the muscles join the joints and that's going to be an ongoing problem for him it seems," Newcombe said.
"At the Davis Cup he'd only played four sets of singles and his shoulder started to play up again and when you've got an injury like that it's hard to go out and practice a lot.
24-years-old Australian should be one of the biggest stars at the upcoming 2020 Australian Open but the forementioned injuries might stop Kyrgios from being able to play his best tennis.
"Leading into the Australian Open - five sets is a big ask for him," Newcombe added.
