Another day, another award for Novak Djokovic as 2023 comes to a close with Marca, the Spanish publication this time recognising the superb year of the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
Djokovic has been swimming in awards recently after being snubbed by the ATP and BBC or in the case of the former for Coach of the Year for Goran Ivanisevic. He won the Champion of Champions with L'Equipe as well as European Sportsperson of the Year beating Iga Swiatek to that honour.
But given it is a Spanish publication, there was also awards for Carlos Alcaraz. The Wimbledon champion who battled hard all year with Djokovic was crowned the best Spanish sportsman of the year.
Iga Swiatek was seen as the fourth best international sportswoman, while Coco Gauff is the fourth best revelation athlete of the year. One reply on social media noted a blunder though from Marca's side in putting Sara Sorribes Tormo's image for Swiatek's section in the piece. There was no spot seemingly for Aryna Sabalenka despite her superb year, but barring that it was very much as expected with Djokovic and Alcaraz topping the respective lists. After feeling underappreciated it seems for one of the best years of his career, Djokovic has seemingly finally got the accolades.
