The finalists of the
Paris Masters are ready to take the court this Sunday, with
Alexander Zverev as the favourite against local hope
Ugo Humbert. The German had a remarkable performance against Holger Rune in the semifinals, defeating him in straight sets to advance to the final.
On the other hand, Humbert has become the first local player to reach the final in Paris-Bercy in 12 years and is the surprise of the tournament. In the semifinals, he overcame a tense duel against Karen Khachanov, coming back from a set down to reach his first Masters 1000 final.
Zverev vs. Humbert: Clash of experience and local hope
Despite not capturing the spotlight that Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have throughout the season, Zverev has maintained his position in the top 3. His progression to the Paris Masters final secures his fourth final and allows him to overtake Alcaraz, returning to his best ranking as world No. 2, just behind Sinner. The German has achieved 65 wins, matching the Italian, and will be vying for his second Masters 1000 title of the season and the seventh of his career on Sunday.
Along the way, Zverev has defeated tough opponents: Tallon Griekspoor in his opener, followed by Arthur Fils (one of the best performers at the season's end). In the quarterfinals, he faced Stefanos Tsitsipas and won in straight sets, reducing his head-to-head to 6-10 against the Greek. The semifinal clash was a notable victory against 2022 champion Holger Rune, also in straight sets.
For Frenchman Humbert, he has restored hope for the locals to see one of their own in the final. He is the first French finalist since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost to Roger Federer in 2011, while the last local champion was Tsonga himself in 2008, defeating David Nalbandian.
Humbert has triumphed over four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, an unexpected win that has filled him with confidence for the upcoming rounds. Against Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals, he had no trouble finishing in straight sets, while in the semifinals, he made a great comeback against Karen Khachanov in a tense match, securing his first Masters 1000 final.
Although experience and favouritism are on Zverev's side, Humbert's victory over Alcaraz demonstrated that the conditions in Paris are ideal for the Frenchman. The support from the local crowd has also been significant for the 26-year-old, and it remains to be seen how he will handle the pressure in decisive phases. So far, the head-to-head stands at 1-1, with Zverev winning their last encounter at the same tournament a year ago.
