Iga Swiatek has led from the front to begin the 2024 United Cup campaign for Poland with a dominant 3-0 win for the top seeds as they saw off Brazil sealing the deal with a mixed doubles outing with Hubert Hurkacz.
The two leading lights of Polish tennis both won their singles ties with Swiatek easing past Beatriz Haddad Maia earlier 6-2, 6-2 without a great deal of fuss. While for Hurkacz, it was a bit more harder as he took down Thiago Seyboth Wild with a comeback 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3 win over the Brazilian to give them an unassailable 2-0 lead.
But instead of resting on their laurels and with Swiatek herself wanting to play mixed doubles with Hurkacz, they returned to give themselves a clean sweep defeating Haddad Maia and Marcelo Melo 6-4, 6-3. As a result the top seeds go to 1-0 up in Group A, while Brazil are now eliminated having dropped their opening tie to Spain.
Spain who like Poland won their opening match will now face off against Swiatek and Hurkacz, with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Sara Sorribes Tormo anchoring them to an opening day win in Perth. They will face off on Monday in some of the first tennis action of the actual New Year.
They followed Germany into the winners' circle with Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev who like Swiatek and Hurkacz harbour Olympic ambitions next Summer saw off Italy albeit they had a more trickier time in seeing it through with it going to the final match. It was more of an easier route for Poland in their opening clash as they sent out an early statement.
Tomorrow technically sees Leylah Fernandez' Canada begin their quest, while Novak Djokovic will open his account for Serbia as will USA's Jessica Pegula who will likely face Katie Boulter for Great Britain.
