Australian Open 2024 came to a grand finish after a memorable
five-set thrilling finale in the men’s singles category.
The first Grand Slam of the year ended up creating history
in terms of crowd attendance. The main draw of the mega-event was attended by
more than one million people which is a record in the competition’s history.
The previous record was 839,192 in the competition last year.
In terms of the three weeks which included the qualification
round as well, 1,110,657 people attended the event which was also the best in
the tournament’s history. The previous best was 902,312 in 2023.
In the men’s singles category, Italy’s young tennis and the current
world number four star
Jannik Sinner lifted the title, which was also his first
Grand Slam title, after beating the current world number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev
in a five-set thriller with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday.
The victory was even more special considering that Sinner lost
the first two sets and lost a service game earlier in the third set as well.
On the other hand, in the women’s singles category, Belarus’
tennis star and the current world number two
Aryna Sabalenka lifted the title
for the second year running after beating China’s Qinwen Zheng in the final in
straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday.
