Former world number one America’s
Billie Jean King has come
under a lot of criticism for her remarks about
ATP players.
The 79-year-old, who has remained very vocal throughout the
years, recently made a comment about the failed deal of
WTA Finals moving to
Saudi Arabia this year.
In that statement, King suggested that for women players,
Saudi Arabia is not an ideal country. She also took a dig at men’s players and claimed
that they might think it is okay to play in a Middle Eastern country and earn
more money.
"I'm glad we're not going to Saudi Arabia right now,”
she said while talking during the US Open. “Because Saudi Arabia, for women, is
really difficult. For some reason the men, they want the money, they think like
that."
Those comments did not go down well with the tennis fans on social media who lambasted the 12-time Grand Slam winner and suggested that
she has ‘zero credibility’.
It is not a secret that Saudi Arabia is keen on investing in
tennis in a similar pattern as they did in golf recently which led to the merger
of PGA Tour and Liv Golf.
There were reports that this year’s WTA Finals will take place
in the Middle Eastern country but recent reports suggested that the deal could
not be finalized.
However, it was reported that the negotiations are still underway
and that Saudi Arabia will become the WTA Finals home from 2024 onwards.
