The tennis world is once again uniting to generate funds to help
to help people in Morocco and Libya.
Both African countries have been struck with major natural catastrophes
in the recent past.
Morocco has been affected by an earthquake with a magnitude of
6.8 which resulted in the loss of lives of more than 3,000 and thousands
injured.
On the other hand, Libya witnessed a dam breakage after
being hit by a storm. The incident resulted in the loss of lives of more than
10,000 people whereas thousands are still missing.
It is because of this reason seven tennis governing bodies —
ATP ,
WTA, ITF and the four Grand Slam tournaments — are coming together to generate
funds.
The former world number 22 Hicham Arazi, who is also from
Morocco, believes that there is an urgent need for money to help hundreds of
thousands of people in living both countries.
"The earthquake in Morocco has devastated communities
and families throughout the Marrakech region, home of our ATP event,” he said. “Many
need our help. It is important to do our best to assist those in need.
“Funds raised will help provide food, clean water and
necessary supplies to survivors, while also supporting longer-term relief and
recovery. I thank in advance the tennis governing bodies, the players, my
fellow former players, and our fans for doing their part and rally for those in
need through Tennis Plays For Love.”
