Novak Djokovic's custom jacket worn at the
US Open to celebrate his 24 Grand Slam titles has been analyzed by fans who believe the colors signify he intended to wear it at
Wimbledon.
Djokovic has had another hugely successful season this year. The Serb started 2023 with 21 major titles, one more than Roger Federer and one less than Rafael Nadal. He then won the Australian Open and French Open to overtake Nadal and equal Serena Williams' Grand Slam total of 23.
However, he was hoping to level Margaret Court's record by achieving his 24th victory at Wimbledon and there was good reason for the Serb to be optimistic. He had already won the grasscourt major seven times and was a quadruple-time defending champion coming into this year's tournament.
Djokovic's shock defeat
However, after making it to the final of this year's SW19, Djokovic was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller. Consequently, he had to wait until Flushing Meadows to try and win his 24th title.
Nevertheless, the 36-year-old came to New York and flew through to the final, ousting all but one of his opponents in straight sets along the way. Once there, he defeated World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3, and was finally able to celebrate his monumental Slam victory.
As part of this celebration, Djokovic wore a custom white jacket with '24' written on it in green lettering and fans were quick to point out that these were the traditional colors usually associated with Wimbledon. Therefore, several have assumed that the jacket must have been made before this year's grasscourt Slam with a victory at the All England Club in mind.
Fans amused by Wimbledon jacket at US Open
"The white colour definitely confirms to me that this was for Wimbledon. Carlito [Carlos Alcaraz] however said NO!" wrote one.
"It's a plain white jacket with the 24 in green bc they thought he was getting it at Wimbledon," added another.
"It was most probably ready for...wimbledon. it's green&white. anyways, 24 came sooner or later," commented a third.
