US Open director prepares for “Eala-Mania” as Filipino star’s debut sends demand soaring

The US Open is already preparing for the arrival of “Eala-Mania”, with tournament director Eric Butorac explaining how officials are responding to the extraordinary support surrounding Alexandra Eala. The Filipino star has quickly become one of the biggest draws at Flushing Meadows, and the tournament is already seeing the impact before she has even played her first singles match.
Eala enters the tournament as the world No. 18 and a former junior US Open champion, having won the girls’ singles title in 2022. The 21-year-old has also established herself as one of the biggest emerging names in women’s tennis, with her breakthrough season taking her to a career-high ranking and a growing following wherever she plays.
That support will be on full display when Eala makes her singles debut on Wednesday, September 2. She will face American Mary Stoiana in the night session on Louis Armstrong Stadium, giving the Filipino star a major stage from the opening round. Stoiana, 23, came through qualifying to earn her place in the main draw and will also be making her Grand Slam debut.
Eala has already experienced the atmosphere at Louis Armstrong during this year's US Open, partnering Felix Auger-Aliassime in mixed doubles. Their run ended in the opening round against Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils, but the match gave tournament officials an early glimpse of the following Eala could bring when she steps onto the court for singles.

Speaking on the Tennis Channel desk, Butorac explained that the tournament deliberately put Eala on one of its major courts after seeing the reaction she generated during Fan Week. Her appearance against Iva Jovic in Stars of the Open produced what he described as an electric atmosphere, giving officials an early indication of what Wednesday night could look like.
“We were fortunate to have her in the mixed. We saw some of the crowd turn up there,” Butorac said. “What she did in Stars of the Open. You know, we changed the format of Stars of the Open during Fan Week to highlight the eight kind of young stars. And having her play against Iva Jovic, I don't know if you guys caught any of that match. But it was electric in there.”
The tournament director also highlighted something beyond Eala's tennis that has helped fuel her popularity. Her accessibility and personality have made her particularly easy for fans to connect with, while her rise into the top 20 has given that following an increasingly significant stage.
“But she's like, she's a better person than she is tennis player, right? And she's so friendly to everyone behind the scenes," Butorac added. "She wants to meet people. She wants to engage. She wants to do everything. I hope she doesn't lose that. I mean, because it is so special."

The decision to place Eala in Louis Armstrong Stadium was not accidental. Butorac said the tournament knew her first singles appearance needed a major setting, and the early indications from ticket demand have only reinforced that decision.
“We scheduled her first match on Louis Armstrong Stadium," Butorac said. "We knew it had to be on a major stadium. We thought that's a great place to start. But I've already kind of monitored some of the secondary pricing. And that session is blowing up."
Eala's connection with Filipino fans has become one of the defining stories around her rapid rise. Now ranked No. 18, she enters the US Open having already established herself as one of the most prominent young players on the women's tour, while carrying the expectations of a country that has followed her breakthrough closely.
For Butorac, the prospect of seeing that support inside Armstrong is one of the most intriguing elements of the opening rounds.
Eala will face Stoiana, a 23-year-old American making her Grand Slam debut after coming through qualifying, with a place in the second round at stake. “I can't wait to have her out there late at night and see all the Filipino crowd behind her. It's going to be really special. Pinoy power. It's big.”

- Great article! I began cheering for the “real” doubles specialists at the beginning but once they all lost their respective matches I really didn’t care who actually won the whole tournament. I liked the last four teams in the semifinals and would have enjoyed seeing any of them win the trophy! - I’m not quite sure what’s happening with Sabalenka but she is horrible on court when she’s losing (which is a lot lately). If you cannot control your self at all once you start losing matches - especially at 28 - you need to see a therapist or take a break from the sport. Terrible attitude.
