America’s young tennis star
Ben Shelton has apologised to the
former world number one
Caroline Wozniacki after almost hitting the Dane with
his serve.
The 21-year-old is often regarded as one of the most
highly-rated players currently playing in the men’s singles category. On the
other hand, the 33-year-old had recently returned to the court after a lengthy break.
Both players played in the Tie Break Tens at the
Indian Wells
which is a shorter format where only tie breaks are played. Shelton partnered
with Emma Navarro whereas Wozniacki partnered with fellow Dane Holger Rune.
The Atlanta-born apologised to Wozniacki after his serve
nearly hit the Odense-born. “ Sorry @CaroWozniacki,” he wrote.
Shelton is taking part in the men’s singles category where
he will play in the second-round contest tomorrow. He is also taking part in
the doubles category where he along with Christopher Eubanks will face the pair
of Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos.
Wozniacki, on the other hand, is only taking part in the women’s
singles category where she has already booked her place in the second round
after beating China’s Zhu Lin in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1. She
will now face Croatia’s Donna Vekic in the second round of the competition on Friday.
