Following the recent doping scandals that have rocked the tennis circuit, WADA Director General Olivier Niggli has highlighted the importance of maintaining the reputation of any player involved in these controversies.
World No.1 Jannik Sinner and Polish superstar Iga Swiatek are the two latest big names to be involved in doping violations. The Italian tested positive for Clostebol, a prohibited substance, earlier this year at Indian Wells, leading to him losing ranking points and prize money from the event. Swiatek tested positive for Trimetazidine, another prohibited substance, which led to her being handed a one-month ban in November.
Although Sinner and Swiatek are among the fan-favorite players on both the ATP and WTA Tours, this did not protect them from criticism from the media and even their fellow players. Despite an independent tribunal ruling that Sinner was not at fault for the incident, WADA challenged the decision, claiming the result was not in accordance with the legal standards of the case.
As a result, the CAS will make one final decision on Sinner's fate. WADA Director General Olivier Niggli stated that WADA's goal was not to offend any athletes, and emphasized the role of social media in tarnishing a player's reputation.
"Personally, I think that protecting an athlete's reputation should be our first priority," said Olivier Niggli in an interview with Punto de Break. "We live in a world where social media is what it is, and with it, someone's reputation can vanish in a very short period of time."
