Australian Open Tournament
Director Craig Tiley has recently announced that the former world number one
Rafael Nadal is set to return to action in the first Grand Slam of the year in
2024.
The Spaniard has been spending
time on the sidelines all this year because of fitness concerns and it is because
of this reason he ended up missing three out of the four Grand Slams.
The news definitely left the
tennis fans excited but it is worth noting that Tiley’s record when it comes to
making announcements has not been great.
Previously, the 61-year-old has
made claims about some of the big-name players that proved to be untrue.
In 2018 and 2020, Tiley announced
that the former world number one Andy Murray would be in action in the
Australian Open but that did not happen.
In 2018 and 2022, he also made
an announcement that America’s legendary tennis star Serena Williams would take
part in the first Grand Slam of the year and that also never happened.
In 2021, Tiley announced that Federer,
who struggled with a knee injury for the most part of 2020, would be playing in
the Australian Open but once again, that did not happen.
Nadal is regarded as one of
the greatest players in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era,
having won 22 Grand Slam titles.
