Novak Djokovic and Zheng Qinwen recently teamed up for an entertaining mixed doubles exhibition match, where both Paris 2024 gold medallists faced former World No. 1 Andy Murray – currently Djokovic’s coach – and Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Australian Open champion.
The match, focused more on fun than competition, featured all four players mic’d up, allowing them to interact with each other to the delight of the audience. Djokovic, known for his humour, frequently joked with his younger partner, the least experienced in such exhibition matches.
After winning the first game and changing sides, 22-year-old Zheng commented to Djokovic, “I like your bag.”
“You like the bag? Where is your gold medal?” Djokovic quickly asked.
“I didn’t bring my gold medal this time.”
“You didn’t take it?” he pressed.
“Only you bring it everywhere,” Zheng quipped, prompting laughter from the crowd.
Zheng Qinwen made headlines during the summer by securing the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, held on the Roland Garros courts. She defeated opponents such as Emma Navarro, Angelique Kerber (saving a match point), and four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek before triumphing over Donna Vekic in the final.
Meanwhile, Djokovic claimed gold in men’s singles, overcoming rivals like Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Lorenzo Musetti before defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final to secure the coveted medal.
The exhibition match at Rod Laver Arena ended with a 4-3 [5-4] victory for Zheng/Djokovic, who shared warm hugs with each other and their opponents Azarenka and Murray.
Cute interaction between Djokovic and Qinwen 😊
