Eugenie
Bouchard had a disappointing performance in her recent mixed doubles
pickleball
match. The former world No. 4 joined the Professional Pickleball Association
(PPA) in September of the previous year and made her debut in January 2024.
The
Canadian had a forgettable outing, losing all three of her matches at the
Hyundai Masters in California. Despite expectations that the former Wimbledon
finalist could turn things around in the PPA, Bouchard continues to struggle.
Bouchard
explained that the transition from tennis to pickleball is not as
straightforward as it might seem, and she didn't feel comfortable in her
initial matches: "It's a completely different sport. I know people think
you can easily transition, and I'm learning that's not the case.
“It is
definitely a different sport, requires different skill sets. So I do obviously
don't feel in my element as much with pickleball. So in the sense of
appreciating tennis, yes, when I get back on the court I'm like, 'Okay, this is
what I've done for 25 years. This is what I know,'"
Fans were
not very forgiving of Bouchard, criticizing her decision to switch from tennis
to pickleball after a video of the 29-year-old player making errors on
seemingly easy shots went viral. Here are some of the comments on X (formerly
Twitter):
"What the hell is this I want my 55sec back I mean why on earth people wanna watch this," some fan wrote
"When you’re a bad player at everything, that’s an attitude too," claimed another user on X.
"She was the same way on the WTA but this is worse."
