America’s tennis star
Sloane Stephens has lambasted the
ATP for
allowing Germany’s
Alexander Zverev to become a part of the Player Council
despite accusations of abuse.
Zverev had a difficult time off the court in 2023 where he
was accused of abusing his girlfriend, a charge he denied. However, he is
still set to face trial in May.
Stephens was recently quoted in a report where she
criticised ATP for allowing such an individual in a Player Council role and suggested.
"I think that the ATP kind of beats their own drum,”
she said. “Yeah, they do what they do on that side. Would that happen on the
WTA Tour? Probably not. Again, he's going to trial, and he will be judged by
his peers, and we will see what happens after that.”
Both players are currently taking part in the Australian
Open 2024. Stephens has already booked her place in the third round of the
mega-event after defeating Russia’s Daria Kasatkina with a score of 4-6, 6-3,
6-3. She will face Anna Kalinskaya in the third-round fixture on Saturday.
On the other hand, Zverev has also booked his place in the
third round of the competition after beating Lukas Klein of Serbia with a score
of 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6. He will face America’s Alex Michelsen in the third
round of the mega-event on Saturday.
