Coco Gauff picked the right moment to finally seal victory over
Iga Swiatek at the
Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) reaching the final in Mason, Ohio which will be played on Sunday.
Gauff had lost seven times in a row prior to today to Swiatek and had lost 14 sets in a row but no more in a 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4 victory.
She becomes the youngest women's player in history to reach the Cincinnati final.
The opening set nearly saw a 15th set in a row for Swiatek with the Pole breaking twice but failing to serve out the set. It ended up in a tiebreak as Swiatek had another poor start, but one that Gauff jumped all over.
Wasting two set points at 6-5, Gauff took her chance. But the second set saw Swiatek firmly back towards her best. She took an early break and was able to hold it throughout to set up a decider.
The final set was close to begin with but Swiatek's game started to unravel again as she struggled on return and on rallies and the result was Gauff taking the lead. After breaking, she had some trouble to consolidate, but Swiatek's consistent response wasn't there and despite multiple match points, Gauff finally got over the line.
The winner of Aryna Sabalenka - Karolina Muchova awaits who play shortly in Ohio.
