2021 Roland Garros quarterfinalist Coco Gauff into round two over Marino

Days after graduating from high school Coco Gauff scored another win at Roland Garros taking down Rebecca Marino 7-5 6-0.

Gauff had a typical Gauff outing where she mostly played great tennis but also complicated things quite a bit at the worst possible moment. Gauff entered this match as a huge favourite and she certainly played like that, at times. The final score is impressive but it hides quite a bit of complication for Gauff who is young and those things will happen.

She lost her serve in the first game but broke back immediately. It's very hard to win a service game against Gauff because she is so quick around the court and you have to outhit her and that's tricky to do. She had a huge hold at 2-2 from 0-40 down to take a 3-2 lead. She then broke Marino to take a 4-2 lead and held serve for 5-2. Then she threw it all away at 5-4 when she had two set points at 40-15.

She escaped from that mess by breaking Marino at 6-5 to take the first set with 6-5 but it was far from a great set by Gauff. In the 2nd one, she played like a huge favourite and wiped the court with Marino serving her a parting bagel. Solid start but a lot of things to improve if she wants another deep run at the French Open.
