The 2021
US Open delivered a brilliant WTA event where we saw many great matches and quite an unexpected final two players standing.
Nobody in their wildest dreams expected
Emma Raducanu or
Leylah Fernandez in the US Open final, let alone both of them. In all fairness, both of them have played an exceptional event so far earning that place completely. The run of Leylah Fernandez to the final has been a sensational one. The Canadian player played some stunning matches including numerous 3-set thrillers where she outplayed much more experienced players regularly.
She defeated Naomi Osaka in 3 sets, she then defeated Angelique Kerber in 3 sets. After that, she took down Elina Svitolina also in 3 sets before finally beating Aryna Sabalenka also in 3 sets. She showed immense courage in those matches not giving up on her playstyle which proved like a good decision. Her opponent had a far easier route to the final simply because she smashed every opponent en route to them.
Raducanu has been so dominant that she reached the semifinal with the fewest games dropped since Serena Williams in 2011. Her lineup of opponents is not as strong as the one Fernandez bested in the past fortnight but she too faced excellent tennis players. In the quarterfinal, she bested Olympic gold medalist Bencic in straight sets.
In the semifinal, she defeated a red-hot Maria Sakkari also in straight sets. In fact she did not drop a set in all of her US Open matches including the qualification ones. A truly impressive run by two teenagers both younger than 20 years and the 2021 US Open final will be the first all-teenage final since 1999. In that final, we saw Serena Williams take on Martina Hingis.
Both went on to become legendary tennis players so are we seeing the birth of new tennis superstars. Quite possibly so, and don't forget to tune in tomorrow when this final is played. We will have a report for you.
