The
WTA Finals are slowly approaching and with the event a week away let's look at who will battle it out for the trophy.
It's been a very long season for a lot of players but the best among them will play one more high-octane event where the stakes will be high. It's the 2021 WTA Finals where the best 8 players from the previous calendar year fight for the title of the best in that year. Because of the pandemic, the event will be held in Guadalajara Mexico which many criticized due to the specific conditions in the Mexican city.
Some players like Ashleigh Barty opted not to attend and despite Barty naming fatigue as a reason for skipping over the event her coach Tyzzer revealed over a month ago that he was less than thrilled with the event being held in the high altitude of Guadalajara. Even without Barty the event will be a strong one and will feature the following players.
- Aryna Sabalenka (World number 2) has had a tremendous year reaching two grand slam semifinals as well as winning the Madrid Masters event.
- Barbora Krejcikova(World number 3) had a major breakout year in 2021 winning her maiden grand slam trophy at Roland Garros.
- Karolina Pliskova (World number 4) played the final in Rome and Wimbledon but regrettably lost both o them. Either way, Pliskova is firmly back in the top 10 after a long time.
- Maria Sakkari (World number 6) also had a breakout year in 2021 playing numerous finals including two grand slam semifinals.
- Iga Swiatek (World number 10) had a solid overall season winning the Rome Masters with a double bagel against Pliskova.
- Garbine Muguruza (World number 5) had a great season winning the premier event in Dubai while also playing consistent tennis all year long.
- Paula Badosa (Wolrd number 11) enjoyed a breakout year winning Indian Wells and reaching the Madrid Masters semifinal.
- Anett Kontaveit (World number 8) played great in final months of the season winning four titles including back-to-back titles in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca.
