The Charleston Open, scheduled to take place between April 1st and 7th, 2024, has unveiled its prize money and points breakdowns, offering a total of $922,573 for the WTA players as the clay season kicks off.
While a significant portion of the clay season unfolds in Europe, the WTA 500 Charleston serves as a transition following the Sunshine Double, allowing players to commence the clay court tournaments in the USA.
The first seed will be Jessica Pegula, who has never won a title on clay. As the world No. 5 and a local player, she will carry the responsibility of at least reaching the later stages of the tournament. However, it won't be easy with several Grand Slam champions in the main draw, including her compatriots Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin, as well as Victoria Azarenka, Barbora Krejcikova, and Jelena Ostapenko.
The draw will feature a total of 9 players in the top 20, including Maria Sakkari, Daria Kasatkina, and Elina Svitolina. Additionally, the defending champion is Ons Jabeur, who defeated Belinda Bencic in the 2023 final with a score of 7-6, 6-4. Unfortunately, Bencic will miss the tournament due to her pregnancy.
