With no Monte-Carlo Masters in the WTA, the Madrid Open (Mutua Madrid Open) is potentially the first chance for big WTA 1000 action for a lot of names ahead of Roland Garros and really kicks off the clay court swing in style. Taking place between April 23 - May 5, 2024, it sees Aryna Sabalenka as defending champion.

Sabalenka though was perhaps more known during her title run last year when she defeated Iga Swiatek in the final for the infamous cake gate and also more spotlight shone on the doubles with Victoria Azarenka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula not allowed to speak after the final. This was after scheduling woes all tournament and Feliciano Lopez was left under fire as tournament director.

But both Sabalenka and Swiatek will return this year to head up the Entry List alongside Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur. In fact only Karolina Muchova (injury) and maternity leave for Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic restricts a full field. The likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Emma Raducanu and Simona Halep may also get wildcards. Angelique Kerber has seemingly not entered with her protected ranking so will either get a wildcard or skip Madrid..
