Sabalenka was the 3rd seed at the Tokyo Olympic Games and she got beaten by
Donna Vekic 6-3 3-6 7-6(3). Swiatek was the 6th seed and she got beaten by
Paula Badosa 6-3 7-6. The victory of Vekic was impressive although maybe not as surprising. She held a 2-0 H2H vs Sabalenka before the match and that record is now 3-0.
Sabalenka lost the first set 6-3 but came right back to win the second 6-3. She was up 4-2 in the final set as well and it seemed like she would be able to complete the comeback. However, an inspiring effort by Vekic forced the match into the tiebreak where the Croatian prevailed 7-3.
Joining Vekic in the 3rd round will be Paula Badosa who produced a sensational win over 6th seed Iga Swiatek. Swiatek did not play well at all and Badosa was able to take advantage of that. The Spaniard is enjoying a breakout season in 2021 and now she continued an Olympic dream.
Swiatek had chances in the 2nd set and took the lead early on 2-0. However, Badosa stormed back and played better and better as the set went on. Swiatek had to save a break point just to get to the tiebreak and in it, she was bested. The Polish player failed to consistently produce her best tennis and today she needed it.
