Television viewership plays a huge role in determining the
success or failure of any major sporting event.
The more the viewership is, the better it will be for any
event, especially in the case of securing a sponsorship or broadcast deals in
the future.
Tennis is no different from other sports. But there is an
advantage to tennis unlike others and that is there are parallel women’s and
men’s competitions going on at every major tournament, which eventually increases
the overall viewership.
The
Wimbledon 2023 is set to conclude today (Sunday) with a
classic encounter in the final of the men’s singles event between the world number
one Carlos Alcaraz and the defending champion Novak Djokovic.
The numbers of that match will become available in a few
days but the numbers regarding the women’s singles final are out and they are
stunning, to say the least.
The much-awaited contest between
Marketa Vondrousova and the
current world number six
Ons Jabeur took place on Saturday.
The Czech Republic’s tennis star ended up securing a stunning
victory against the favourite Jabeur in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
As per the latest report, a staggering number of 4.4 million
watched the final on the BBC, which will definitely going to please the
authorities.
The report further stated more than two million watched the coverage
on BBC One when it started at quarter past one in the afternoon on Saturday.
The match managed to draw as many as 3.7 million viewers on
the BBC, an impressive figure to say the least.
These figures do not include the fans who were watching the match outside
of their home such as in bars, pubs or other public places.
