Jessica Pegula has been the model of consistency for some time on the WTA Tour and that has shown in her victories after winning the first set in a stat that shocked her at the
WTA Finals.
Pegula defeated Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-2 to open the tournament in a tough group that some expected her to be winless out of with Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Rybakina, but amid the poor conditions, it was Pegula that thrived.
She holds a record of 48-0 this year when winning the first set and this made Pegula wide-eyed at the insanity of it.
"Really? Oh wow. Holy [laughs] Really? Wow. I really, I'm going to be zeroing on these first sets now. Or like, if I won the first set Im going to be really tight, like if I don't win the second set I'm going to uh[sighs]."
But on being reminded that winning in the first and losing the second would mean there is still a third set, she honed in on the positives. "I gotta look at it in a positive way. Thank you. That's a crazy stat."
