Coco Gauff
delighted to discover she becomes the first teenager to win 50 matches in a WTA
1000. The world No. 3 reached the milestone after a tough match against Clara
Burel (No. 47) in the second round of
Indian Wells, which was decided in the
third-set tie-break by 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4).
The
American will turn 20 on March 13th, and no teenager has won as many matches as
her in a WTA 1000, considering that the category was created in 2009. Gauff
found out about the achievement after the victory over Burel and reacted
surprised by the accomplishment.
"Oh, I
have the most? Ok. I didn't know that. I thought a couple of people were ahead
of me. Well, that's pretty cool. I feel like I have a lot of stats and stuff
like that. Hopefully, I can close this chapter of my life off good," she
said.
The 2023 US
Open champion commented that her goal is to keep winning titles, and she has at
least a decade to continue achieving victories:
"I am
really happy with how my teenage years went. I did everything I wanted to do,
which my biggest was winning a major as a teenager, hopefully I can win a
couple more in my 20s. Age is just a number, I'm gonna be out here for at least
another 10 years," Coco Gauff added,
Her first
appearance in a WTA 1000 was at the 2019
Miami Open at the age of 15, receiving a wild card.
She secured a significant victory over Caty McNally in the first round but was
eliminated in her second match against the 14th seed Daría Kasatkina.
Her best result so
far was the title at the 2023 Cincinnati Open, and she has reached at least the
quarterfinals of WTA 1000 events in 11 of her previous 28 participations.
