Alexandra Eala achieved the biggest win of her career by eliminating Madison Keys in the third round of the Miami Open with a 6-4, 6-3 scoreline. The left-handed player secured her first Top-5 victory against the 2025 Australian Open champion, who had entered the match with a 19-2 season record.
Eala entered the main draw after receiving a wildcard and quickly became a player to watch after defeating 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the second round (7-6, 7-5). The World No. 140 will face another top-10 player in the Round of 16, as she takes on Spain’s Paula Badosa (No. 10).
The first set was a rollercoaster, with both players exchanging constant breaks. Eala had a strong start, breaking immediately and winning 8 of the first 9 points. However, it was just a glimpse of the erratic service games from both sides.
Both players managed three consecutive breaks, bringing the score to 4-4, where neither had defended their serve more than once. At 5-4, Alexandra Eala called a medical timeout due to a left thigh issue, forcing an off-court treatment that took her off the court for a few minutes.
Upon returning, Keys seemed to have lost her rhythm at a crucial point in the match, which allowed Eala to break at the perfect moment and win the set 6-4.
In the second set, both players showed improved serving. At 2-1, Eala required another medical treatment for her thigh during the changeover, though this time she didn’t need to leave the court. Although Eala was outpaced by Keys, especially when the American hit from the baseline with her forehand, Eala showcased impressive court coverage and kept the rallies going, reminiscent of players trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy.
Eala improved her first-serve percentage from 47% in the first set to 74% in the second. A double fault gave Eala the break to lead 4-2, and she knew that holding her serve would give her the career-defining win. After defending her serve, she capitalized on the pressure Keys was under, broke again, and sealed the victory 6-4, 6-2.
The 19-year-old Filipino player had an emotional reaction, marking the best win of her career. Eala continues to climb the rankings and is now in her highest position ever, World No. 117, as she rapidly approaches the top-100.
