Amanda Anisimova clinched her first WTA 1000 title after defeating Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-3 in the Qatar Open final. The American capped off a flawless week in Doha, dropping just one set in the quarterfinals against Marta Kostyuk.
In a final featuring two unseeded players, few would have predicted a title match without Sabalenka, Swiatek, or Gauff. However, both Anisimova and the Latvian delivered an entertaining contest, with the American stepping in to take the crown from Swiatek, who had won the previous three editions.
Anisimova started confidently on serve and was the first to create break opportunities, eventually capitalising on her fourth chance to go up 3-2. However, Ostapenko responded immediately with a break of her own to level the set at 3-3.
The former French Open champion struggled with her serve, hitting five double faults and landing 63% of her first serves in play, winning 65% of them. In contrast, Anisimova was far more dominant, making 81% of her first serves and winning 76% of those points. The pressure mounted on Ostapenko in a shaky service game at 4-4, allowing Anisimova to break once more before sealing the set 6-4 in just 36 minutes.
Ostapenko appeared to gain momentum early in the second set, holding serve comfortably and then pushing her opponent to the limit to earn a break. However, the score remained level, with both players exchanging breaks to keep it tied at 2-2. Anisimova’s first-serve percentage also dropped significantly.
Parity remained until 3-3 when a rain delay forced both players off the court. Upon resumption, Ostapenko seemed to lose her rhythm, while Anisimova came back looking determined to seal the victory. The American quickly secured a crucial break in a tightly contested game and maintained her lead to close out the match 6-4, 6-3, claiming her maiden WTA 1000 title at the Qatar Open.
