The recent conclusion of Indian Wells 2025 has generated interesting movements in the ATP and WTA rankings. Mirra Andreeva has become the big sensation among women after winning two Masters 1000 in a row. The Russian is now close to the top 5 and many stars are in danger if they continue to lose ground.
The landscape of women's tennis has undergone significant changes at the end of the desert tournament:
Aryna Sabalenka reaffirms her position as leader with 9606 points despite a detail that cannot go unnoticed: she has not lifted a trophy since January 5, when she opened the year with the title in Brisbane. Since that moment the Belarusian has shown an overwhelming level in most of the matches she has played, but with problems to close the matches. Losing the final in Australia was a huge blow for the world number 1, who had a confidence slump with premature defeats in Doha and Dubai.
Last week Sabalenka had dominated again, dropping just one set on her way to the final where she would end up losing a match that was getting complicated for her.
Having raised the level meant a lot to Sabalenka, who despite the bitter pill in the final, improved on last season's round of 16, securing points.
Another good news for the Belarusian is that a good week in Florida could mean scoring a lot of points, key to take distance from her immediate pursuer: Iga Swiatek.
The Polish player is going through a similar moment as Sabalenka. In many matches it seems that Swiatek is playing in another category, handing out donuts left and right, but so far, no titles in the season;
With 7375 points, Swiatek suffered a small setback as she did not defend her crown at Tennis Paradise. The good news is that in Miami she could take some points off the No. 1, since Iga lost in the round of 16 to Alexandrova in 2024.
After Miami the Tour will move to clay, a place that the Pole has dominated for years but where she also defends a huge amount of points. She will have tough competition this season, especially with the rise of Mirra Andreeva.
Despite this "drought" of titles of the two main stars of the circuit, both have been able to maintain their positions. For the time being, Coco Gauff is the one who completes the top 3, and the weak results of the American have been a respite for those who watch her from above.
Precisely Coco Gauff is so far one of the great disappointments of the season, considering the phenomenal end of the year that the American had, with a golden brooch in the WTA Finals. It's hard to believe that just a few months ago, Gauff was punishing without mercy and seemed to have solved her problems with her forehand, but in 2025 she has only won the United Cup.
Indian Wells. Bencic stunned the No. 3 seed in the round of 16, which cost her some points considering she had made the semifinals last season.
In Miami, she could score some points if she adjusts her aim. Gauff reached the round of 16 in 2024, before losing to France's Caroline Garcia. With 6063 points she needs to get back to her tennis soon, as Jessica Pegula is lurking in fourth place.
Gauff's former doubles partner, Jessica Pegula, is in fourth place with 5361 points and is coming off a tough loss in front of her home crowd in the round of 16 to Elina Svitolina. She has a good opportunity in Miami to improve on what she did in 2024 and aim for a top eight finish in the tournament. After the close of the Sunshine Double, Pegula has only points to add since she practically did not play the 2024 clay court season, but she should not be careless, Madison Keys is on her heels.
The reigning Australian Open champion is coming off a merciless thrashing by Aryna Sabalenka in what was the perfect revenge for the Belarusian for what happened in Melbourne. Keys has 5004 points and a complicated debut against Avanesian in Miami;
Last year, Rybakina eliminated her in the round of 16, so a good performance now could mean stealing her place from compatriot Jessica Pegula.
Of course, Madison has the best player of the moment breathing down her neck: Mirra Andreeva.
A phenomenal start to the season for Mirra Andreeva, who at 17 years old is very close to achieving one of the goals she had set for the season, to get into the top 5 after climbing 5 positions. What she has improved since the Australian Open so far is impressive, defeating several top ten players on her way to her coronation in Dubai and Indian Wells. At the moment, Andreeva is the player to beat, or so her rivals should start considering her if they don't want to keep losing her pace.
In Miami 2024, the newly crowned champion of the Californian tournament did not participate due to a physical problem, so she has everything to win. She has 4710 points and 1000 more points would mean hitting the doors of the top 3;
Closing the top 10, Jasmine Paolini (4518) in seventh position, giving up a place to the hurricane that has caused the young Russian star, but lucky not to defend so many points. In 2024, she lost in the round of 16 in California and in the round of 32 in Miami.
The eighth is now the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (4448), who has played well in this start of the year despite the scandal with Vukov. Watch out, in Miami she is defending points for last year's final, where she lost to Danielle Collins. She is very close to Paolini but this fact plays in favor of the Italian.
In the ninth position is Zheng Qinwen (3985), who lost in the first round of Miami 2024 and therefore has a good chance in this edition of the Florida tournament to get closer to Rybakina and even snatch the place.
Closing the top Emma Navarro (3859) who dropped several points after the defeat in the round of 32 in Indian Wells and defends round of 16 in Miami 2025.
Finally we can not fail to mention Paula Badosa, who with 3736 points can get back into the top 10 if she brings out the version that dazzled everyone in Australia.
The top 3 still have a margin of protection against their pursuers, but at the end of the Miami Open many things can change the picture. From position 5 to 10 the fight is very close and that is where the biggest change could happen at the end of the Sunshine Double.
