Bianca Andreescu found herself in a mid-match slump on Tuesday night at the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup), but the defending champion powered through to advance past Great Britain's Harriet Dart and secure her spot in the next round.
Andreescu required all her championship grit to grind out the 6-1 3-6 6-3 win, relying on the home crowd to spur her to victory. After cruising through the first set, Andreescu suffered a lapse in concentration as she struggled to keep balls in play. Furthermore, Dart improved her level of play as she dictated points to obtain the second set her her higher-ranked opponent.
With the match tied at a set apiece, Andreescu was able to produce some exceptional play that saw her gain the crucial break of serve. Not looking back, the World No.8 served out the match after two hours to advance to the round of 16.
The second seed will face the winner between 13th seed Ons Jabeur and recent San Jose finalist Daria Kasatkina.
