Stefanos Tsitsipas was pushed to the limit as he lost an amazing second set tiebreak, but was able to recover and oust
Ugo Humbert in their second round encounter at the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup).
The 2018 runner-up required two and a half hours to obtain a 6-3 6-7(13) 6-1 victory over Humbert, notching his first win in three career meetings against the Frenchman.
With Tsitsipas dominating the first set, it looked like Humbert would be having an early night. However, the World No.27 fought to break back when his Greek opponent served for the match at 5-4. A dramatic tiebreak ensued, during which Tsitsipas held five match points. Nonetheless, Humbert remained resilient, attacking the net at the right moment before eventually claiming the 23-minute tiebreak to send the match into a decider.
However, it was all Tsitsipas in the final set as the third seed dominated from the baseline. The World No.3 was almost flawless on serve, winning 84% of points on his first serve. He was finally able to convert on his seventh match point, heaving a sigh of relief as he booked his spot in the round of 16.
The Greek star will face the winner of the all-Russian battle between 15th seed
Aslan Karatsev and
Karen Khachanov.
