Bianca Andreescu overcame some spectacular play from
Viktorija Golubic on Tuesday at the
US Open, surviving the late night encounter to advance to the second round.
The sixth seed required almost three hours to pull off the 7-5 4-6 7-5 victory, having to deal with some inspired play from her Swiss opponent. Golubic came out swinging, surprising the 2019 champion with her speed and shot placement.
Andreescu was able to win the first set thanks to some inconsistent play from the World No.45, who faltered towards the finish line. The second set saw a more composed Golubic dominate most of the points, with her Canadian opponent being the one who was overcome by errors.
Golubic obtained the crucial break in the final set, to go up 4-3. However, she was broken back by the World No.7, who displayed her fighting spirit by not giving up. As Golubic served to push the match to a tiebreak, it was Andreescu who increased her intensity, letting out a huge roar as the final ball sailed long. The former champion had survived by the skin of her teeth, with her 40 winners offsetting the 36 unforced errors that came off her racket.
