A great battle was fought between
US Open former champions
Angelique Kerber and
Sloane Stephens with the German proving better.
It was a marvellous match by both Stephens and Kerber at the US Open with Angelique winning 5-7 6-2 6-3. The start of the match was great by Stephens who caught Kerber out of sync struggling to handle the pressure applied by Stephens. The American bombarded with success early on but ultimately Kerber found ways to crawl back into the match.
She broke Stephens when the American served for the set. Kerber practically gave the set away minutes later with two double faults at 5-6 to make it 7-5 for Stephens. Disappointed by that, Kerber came out focused in the next set playing even more aggressively.
Now in rhythm she started hitting some great shots with her forehand taking an early break. Stephens completely fell apart after that with Kerber running away with the set 6-2. The final set featured excellent play by both. Stephens found her baseline game again and bombarded away.
She carved out two break point chances only to squander them both. After the big hold Kerber was full of confidence. She played an amazing game, broke her opponent and proceeded to finish off the match with 6-3 in the final set.
