Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka was beginning to ascend to the top of the WTA circuit six years ago when tragedy struck her family, as her father Sergey Sabalenka suddenly passed away at the age of 43.

A former hockey player, Sergey suddenly took ill with meningitis before tragically passing away. The traumatizing event took a huge toll on the WTA star, who had a very close relationship with her father.

Sabalenka reveals she visits church often in his honor

Although the big-hitting Belarusian would go on to win three Grand Slam titles and clinch the World No.1 ranking, her father was never far from her thoughts. In an interview with Flaunt Magazine, Sabalenka revealed she makes frequent visits to church to light candles in his memory. Not many people were aware of this fact, as Sabalenka has vowed to keep it hidden from the public eye.

"I’m really open," said the two-time Australian Open champion. "But I have to say, when I lost my dad, from time to time, I would go to the church and put a candle for his memory and the memory of my grandfather.
"It’s something you never show on social media. I’m not gonna be the one in the church filming."

Prior to her father's passing, Sabalenka had made a promise to him that she would win two Grand Slam titles by the age of 25. In January 2023, she finally became a Grand Slam champion after beating Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final. Sabalenka would win her her second Major after successfully defending her title at Melbourne Park, just four months before her 26th birthday.
