Aryna Sabalenka was heavily expected to withdraw from the
Miami Open as a result of the passing of her boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov on Monday evening suddenly at the age of 42. But she will instead continue on in Florida for the second half of the so-called Sunshine Double.
Sabalenka who lost to Emma Navarro last time out at Indian Wells will face either her best friend, Paula Badosa or former World No.1, Simona Halep in the second round this week. Badosa no doubt will likely be emotional herself given her bond with the Australian Open champion going into her clash against the returning Romanian.
It was confirmed from her publicist to UPI when it was revealed that Koltsov's passing was suicide that she still planned to play. This has since also been confirmed by Tennis Channel during their coverage with commentators saying that she will still play. Albeit there is one caveat to this.
Sabalenka will as expected not take part in any semblance of press during the tournament after the tragic passing of her partner. Her opponent will be confirmed later on Tuesday evening.
