Emma Raducanu's lower back injury which was confirmed as the reasoning behind her sudden withdrawal from the 2024 Miami Open is 'nothing serious' as per her management company who were behind her wildcard into the WTA 1000 tournament.
The former US Open champion was due to face China's Wang Xiyu in the first round on Tuesday. However according to the BBC who stated the response from her management, she didn't want to aggravate an injury by playing over the next week. It is the first injury blow since her return with the Brit beaten last week by Aryna Sabalenka at Indian Wells. It is not known yet whether the injury will impact her playing the Billie Jean King Cup.
This may be swerved by Raducanu especially given the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart which she already has a wildcard for and is a brand ambassador for the car manufacturer. So it will be one to certainly keep tabs on ahead of the clay court season.
"I have been experiencing lower back pain and at this stage of my return to competition I don't want to risk anything happening," Raducanu said in a statement issued by tournament organisers.
"I really tried my best to be ready and I'm sad to be pulling out of Miami as it's a cool tournament, but wish the event all the best."
