Aryna Sabalenka surprisingly defeated
Iga Swiatek in three sets 6-2 2-6 6-1 to reach the
WTA Finals final against Garcia.
Sabalenka did not have a brilliant year overall but she did well enough to find herself at the WTA Finals and she'll have a chance to play for the trophy. In a stunning late-season turnaround, Sabalenka was able to rediscover some of her best tennis to defeat the undisputed world number one.
This result is very surprising to many because Swiatek looked very comfortable on the court in previous matches never showing any weaknesses. She showed many here as she was unable to stay in rallies with Sabalenka. Far too many errors and very vulnerable on the serve which Sabalenka exploited rather easily 6-2.
The second set was a good comeback by Swiatek. Much better from the baseline with heavy pressure on the Belarusian who fell apart under it. It looked like Iga would turn the match around but then something extraordinary happened.
Playing her best tennis of the year, Sabalenka was able to thoroughly outplay her opponent to win the final set 6-1. She served amazing and dominated rallies cruising to a very surprising win.
