Ashleigh Barty got her US Open campaign underway with a strong straight sets win over Vera Zvonareva 6-1 6-3.
Before she even stepped onto the court to face Zvonareva, Barty was happy about playing her. It was a measured test according to Barty and early on it really did not seem that way. Zvonareva did not play her best tennis while Barty was very good and it resulted in a very quick 6-1 thrashing for the Australian.
The Ashe crowd was enjoying the match but it seemed like it would be a quick one especially when Barty took an early lead 2-1 lead with a chance to go up 3-1. However, something clicked for Zvonareva who played a smashing game to tie it up at 2-2.
The Russian finally arrived and after that, we watched a very good match. Barty was dominant on her first serve yet Zvonareva had decent looks on her 2nd. On her own serve the Russian fought hard but eventually succumbed to Barty who broke her to take a 4-3 lead.
At 5-4, Barty served for the match but Zvonareva played a few good rallies and broke Barty at the worst possible moment for the Australian. Zvonareva continued playing well and forced a tiebreak where she pushed Barty quite hard. Zvonareva actually had a set point but Barty remained calm winning it with 9-7.
