Former world number one
Naomi Osaka has revealed that her performance
during the
Australian Open gave her a ‘reality check’.
The 26-year-old recently returned to the court after a gap
of nearly one year because of pregnancy. Her return did not go as per plan as
she was knocked out of the Australian Open after losing in the first round to France’s
Caroline Garcia in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6.
Osaka was recently quoted in a report where she stated that
her outing in the first Grand Slam of the year gave her a ‘harsh’ reality check
but believes she can perform better in the upcoming competitions.
"It’s like Australia gave me a little bit of
self-doubt,” she said. “Just because I wish I could have played more matches
and like I always do really well in Australia. So, it was a bit of a harsh
reality. But I still think my level is improving every day and I think that I
can be better and I hope that I will be better.”
Osaka, who is a four-time Grand Slam winner, will next
appear in the Abu Dhabi Open in the United Arab Emirates where she will face
America’s Danielle Collins in the round of 32 clash on Tuesday.
